Work with Senior Citizens

During college, I had the amazing opportunity to work for EngAGE, a nonprofit organization that provides a variety of classes to senior citizens in their apartment communities. This work has influenced my love for teaching students of all ages in a variety of performing arts subjects.

"EngAGE creates community & changes lives by transforming affordable senior & multigenerational housing communities into vibrant centers of learning, wellness, & creativity... The EngAGE mission is to empower people - intellectually, creatively, & emotionally - to do what they do best for the rest of their lives."

I taught music for the wonderful seniors of the Long Beach Senior Arts Colony, The Pacific Avenue Arts Colony, & The Magnolia at Highland. When I first started working for EngAGE, I taught private & group piano lessons. For the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were not able to have in-person lessons, & residents no longer had access to a piano. It was then that I adapted my curriculum to teach singing, music theory, music history, & music appreciation via Zoom. Upon being able to return to in-person instruction, I put together an intergenerational choir for senior citizens & their grandchildren. The seniors really enjoyed all of these music classes, & it was so inspiring to see them blossom as artists.

The following is a piece from my recital, which was virtual due to the pandemic. This piece, "The Voice of Lir" from Three Irish Legends by Henry Cowell, features some interesting extended techniques, using more than just my hands to play the piano!

Lir of the half tongue was the father of the universe. When he gave the orders for creation, the gods understood but half of what he said, with the result that for everything created there is an unexpressed & concealed counterpart.

Click here for a YouTube Playlist where you can view my recital in its entirety, including Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata & works by Chopin, Albéniz, Mendelssohn Hensel, & Einaudi.

Below is a live performance of "August" from Das Jahr (The Year) by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, the lesser-known sister of Felix Mendelssohn, at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music's Spring 2021 Piano Showcase.

Click here to watch my performance of Frédéric Chopin's beautiful Nocturne Op. 48 No. 1 in C Minor, one year later at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music's Spring 2022 Piano Showcase!

I had the opportunity to collaborate on an 8 hands piano piece at the BCCM's 2022 Multi-Piano Extravaganza. Click here to watch us perform Mozart's Overture to The Marriage of Figaro.
